Interview of Dr JEAN-PIERRE ROUTY

AIDS has now been a part of modern life for 30 years and effective treatments have been broadly available for a little over 15 years. As a result, there is now a special group of the HIV population that is ideally placed for groundbreaking new therapy aimed at eradicating the disease - teenagers who were born HIV positive from HIV mothers.

Jean-Pierre Routy of McGill University is leading this new research, to be presented at the upcoming ISHEID conference. He says that young people are particularly suited to his treatments, both psychologically and medically. “They have a good immune system to fight the disease. But they are adolescents. It is very difficult for them to take pills, meet new people, announce that they have HIV. It is my dream to help them.....”
